Michelle Obama, her daughters and Meryl Streep were here in Marrakech the other day in aid of Michelle’s “Let Girls Learn” initiative. The visit was a huge success and created plenty of media attention. We believe this is a cause that deserves constant recognition and are therefore thrilled that such a strong and influential woman as America’s 1st Lady has joined forces to promote and raise awareness of the importance of a girl’s education.
Here at Berber Wares we could not agree more and have therefore, since the very beginning, supported girls’ education, development and independence.
One of the ways we do so is by donating 5% of our profits to the charity of our choice – Education For All – a wonderful and inspirational cause that facilitates girls from rural villages in the High Atlas Mountains to remain in education.
Because we work towards following fair trade policies it is vital to us that the wonderful Berber artisans we work together with do so by choice rather than being forced into it through family circumstances or lack of education. We strongly believe in empowering girls to making their own life choices.
Berber women are the creative force behind many of our beautifully woven rugs and pompom & Handira blankets. They spin wool sheared from live sheep that roam across the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. As young girls they would have sat beside their mothers and learnt the ancient craft of weaving, enabling us to offer customized rugs and blankets to our clients. They take pride in their independence and being able to support their families. We delight that we are in a position to support them. It doesn’t require being a first lady to DO GOOD. By purchasing a Berber Wares product you too are contributing!
